What do you love the most about being in the wine industry?
I got into the wine industry 12 years ago after traveling through Europe, experiencing the wines and immersing myself in the culture. I realized how intertwined wine is with culture and history; it really opened my eyes to truly experiencing wine as opposed to just opening a bottle and drinking it. Now I fall in love as much with the story behind a wine as I do with the experience I have in a glass.
If you were a bottle of wine what wine would you be and why?
I am often asked my favorite wine. One would think that would be an easy answer but the more I explore the wine world the more challenging that response becomes. My palate is constantly evolving and favorites come, go and oftentimes come right back round back again. I frequently associate a memory with a specific wine experience and every time I open that same bottle, that memory is revived and relived.
One of my all time favorite memories was when I traveled to Valdobbiadene, Italy on my birthday to drink Vigna Sancol, one of our winemakers. We sat on the side of a mountain drinking their spectacular Prosecco from a funnel because they told me this is the traditional way it was drunk by the men after a long day in the vineyards. Although there was a communication barrier, we had a wonderful day speaking the language of vino.
What is your “desert island wine region”, where the rest of your life will be spent drinking only the wines of this region, and why?
If I were stranded forever on a desert island, all I ask for is a never ending supply of bubbly—Prosecco, Champagne, Cava, sparkling. My last meal? Southern fried chicken and bottle of Condrieu.
