Corte Figaretto’s family-run farm is in the heart of Valpantena, a valley situated just north of Verona. In this southerly exposed valley lie its vineyards, planted to Corvina, Rondinella, Molinara, Cabernet and Merlot. The essentially Mediterranean climate, characterized by contained rainfall, is further tempered in the summer months by the evening breezes originating from the Lessino mountains. Mauro Bustaggi is the winemaker, his wife Patrizia is the cellar master, and Mauro’s brother is the vineyard manager. Corte Figaretto carries on the labor intensive and cost prohibitive tradition of creating Amarone wines using straw mat fermentation, whereby grapes are dried on straw mats for a full 120 days then pressed. After years of experimentation, Mauro began applying a similar production method to his Cabernet and Merlot wines, resulting in a cult following for every wine he produces as well as numerous awards.
